Introduction
When people talk about the top five famous grasslands in Xinjiang-Nalati, Bayinbrook, Kalajun, Zhaosu, and Tangbula-these are the ones that come up again and again. Endless green, wind making waves through the grass-you just can't find that kind of openness anywhere else. The hillsides in the Ili Valley are covered with wildflowers. The Kaidu River winds through Bayinbrook, with swans swimming on the water. Every one of these grasslands is different. Below are the five most famous and most worth visiting in Xinjiang. Local herders have grazed their sheep here for generations. And tourists—even if they only take one look, they never forget how vast it is.
Xinjiang's Five Famous Grasslands
Location: Xinyuan County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Green grass everywhere, patches of wildflowers, snow mountains in the distance, sheep and cattle roaming around. One section is called the Sky Prairie-high up with far views. Another is the Valley Prairie-more water, better grass, good for walking or horse riding. Suggest spending one day.
Good for:
First-time grassland visitors to Xinjiang
People who want to ride horses
Family trips
People who like snow mountains + grassland

Bayinbrook Grassland
Location: Hejing County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. Pretty flat terrain, lots of grass and water. This is where swans hang out. The Nadam Fair happens here every year. The best part is the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns. Around sunset, the light bounces off the winding water-really beautiful. You can see swans in spring. Grass is thickest in summer. One day is enough.
Good for:
Photography lovers
Birdwatchers
People who want flat, wide-open grassland
People willing to wait for sunset

Kalajun Grassland
Location: Tekes County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The ground goes up and down. Grassland mixed with canyons and forests. Kuokesu Grand Canyon is right next to it. The grassland has layers to it. Stand at the edge and you get canyon views. Lots of wildflowers in summer. Good for photos and walking. One day is enough.
Good for:
People who like hiking and in-depth travel
Photography lovers
People who don't want to deal with Nalati crowds
People who like wildflowers

Zhaosu Grassland
Location: Zhaosu County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Very open, vast grassland. Rapeseed flower fields and purple perilla fields on the edges. Tianshan snow mountains in the background. In summer, you get flowers and grassland together. You can ride horses, watch herds of cattle and sheep. Autumn grass looks nice too when it turns yellow. Half a day is plenty. You can combine it with the flower fields.
Good for:
People who want to see flower fields
People who like horse riding
Self-drive travelers
People traveling from late June to mid-July

Tangbula Grassland
Location: Nileke County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. More natural, not heavily developed. Small streams, lots of trees, herding trails running every which way. Good for people who want peace and quiet. You can ride along the pastoral trails or set up a tent on the grass. Fewer people, but still beautiful. Suggest one day.
Good for:
People who like natural, quiet places with fewer crowds
People who want to try horseback riding across the grassland
Camping lovers
People passing through on Duku Highway who want a stop

Big temperature difference between day and night on the grasslands. Even in summer, bring a light jacket and long pants so you don't get cold.
If you ride horses, go with a licensed horse team. Listen to the guide. Don't take off on your own or chase anything. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes.
When camping or hiking, don't damage the grass. Don't drive over the meadow. Take all your trash with you. Help keep the place natural.
Cell signal can be weak in some grassland areas. Download offline maps before you go. Don't wander into undeveloped areas by yourself.
