Ruins of Kara-Dong


Ruins of Kara-dong Situated about 20 kilometers to the northwest of Daheyan Township, Yutian County, first found by Sven Hedin, a Swedish, in 1896. In 1901, Aurel Stein came here and underwent an excavation in the city and its vicinity. Later on, Chinese scholars have come here for investigations many times since 1929. From 1993 to 1996, Sino-France Joint Archaeological Team has carried into effect a series of all-around investigations and excavations here. They found more than 60 localities of cultural remains in all kinds, including the ancient city that is the center of the site, dwellings, religious construction-temples, and irrigation canals that mirror agricultural activities here. It is listed as a major cultural site under autonomous region protection.
